For at least 50 years, Taft’s Market, which was located near Sandy Beach at Harvey’s Lake, served the area as your typical “mom and pop” corner butcher and grocery store. Going back even further to another era, the building also served at one time as the Harvey’s Lake Post Office, as well as Rood’s Market. When the Taft family was ready to sell, co-owner Beth Ann Delaney and a few friends purchased the business as an investment opportunity. “I wanted to invest in the community because I have lived out here for a good part of my life,” Beth Ann noted. Harvey’s Lake Country Store opened for business in 2003, carrying on the Taft’s tradition for selling the best meats, but specialized in fresh-cut steaks and center-cut pork chops. They even inherited Taft’s sausage recipe. Co-owner Sheri Metz is known for making the best hoagies in town. In addition, she presents a variety of ethnic menu items, including haluski, pierogie, and ‘piggies’. And, according to beth ann, “the BBQs and homemade soups are delicious.” A bright new future has recently emerged, and a new look and name are planned to revitalize the historic building. Following a prolonged construction phase, the ownership is now eager to boast a new ambiance at the new Lake Bistro. In addition to the finest quality meats and delicatessen in town, Wi-Fi capability has been added. The front of the building now features ceiling-to-floor windows so that customers can sip on their morning coffee with their laptops, and enjoy a great view of the lake at the same time. Green Mountain Coffees and a light breakfast menu have been added, and beer and wine are now available. Beth Ann hopes to host many events at the newest cafe venue at Harvey’s Lake, including wine tastings. It is also hoped that they may also open the floor to some impromptu musicians from time to time. “I would love to have young people come in with their guitars and play, as they do in Ireland,” she explained. On Sunday, October 26th, 1:00-3:00 p.m., The Tea Basket Place and Lake Bistro will present An Afternoon Tea Party, a traditional afternoon tea, complete with scones, finger sandwiches and dessert, as well as a selection of loose leaf teas. Reservations are required on or before October 15th. Contact Sheri Metz, at (570) 639-5216. Lake Bistro's hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Delivery to Harvey’s Lake residents is also available. |
